“By the time I realised the importance of my teeth, I no longer had them”

I am 55 years old and I came to England from Romania two years ago. During my childhood I had many problems with my teeth. I was never taught to look after them properly. By the time I realised the importance of my teeth, I no longer had them.

“My first dentures weren’t very good”

I didn't have too much money. It was hard to have a decent life because I was a single mother. My mother gave me some money to pay for my first dentures which weren't very good. I couldn’t wear them.

“I spent very little time with any of my friends because of my appearance”

Soon after that I lost my job. My daughter was in her last year at university and she needed a great deal of financial support. At this time, her education was the most important thing in my life. So I lived without dentures and got by with only a few natural teeth in my lower jaw. I couldn't eat properly and I spent very little time with any of my friends because of my appearance. To make things worse I had a heart attack in 1999.
